Steps to Generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) via Cpanel

To generate a CSR (i.e. Certificate Signing Requests) one should have a Dedicated IP number and a generated Key file. In order to generate the Key file, please follow this article “Steps to Generate Key for SSL Certificate“.

1. To generate the CSR click on “SSL Manager” (or “SSL/TLS Manager”)

2. Click on Certificate Signing Requests (CSR) (or “Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests”)

3. For the HOST, choose the domain name that you’ve generated the KEY for. Be sure to select the www version if you wish to install the certificate using www.

Please note that if you made a key for www.yourdomain.com, you will need to include the www here. If the key was for secure.yourdomain.com, you will need to include that here. If you made the key for just yourdomain.com without a www, please be sure to type that.

If you are not able to select www.yourdomain.com in the list, it means you probably did not add (www) to the key you generated. If you need www in the certificate and can’t select your www.domain.com from the list, please go back now and get a fresh key with the www.

4. Then fill out the rest of the form with the proper information.

  • Spell out your full state or territory
  • Country code is 2 digits – US, CA, IE, and MX etc.
  • Company name and address should be as you would like it to appear on the certificate. If you want your company name and address all lower case, for example, you would type it that way here.
  • Department can be “Sales” or “Online” or whatever you’d like. Again, it’s whatever you’d like to show on the certificate.
  • Think of a pass code you will remember in the rare case you should need to use it (you do not need it for installation).
  • 5. Click on Generate

Store this information in a text file on your PC. You will need this information when you purchase your SSL Certificate. Once you have your SSL certificate, get your generated Key, CA bundle & CRT files, and follow this article “Steps to Install the SSL Certificate via Cpanel”.

Steps to Generate Private Key for SSL Certificate

To generate a Private Key file for SSL Certificate, one should have a Dedicated IP number. Without a Dedicated IP number the icons in the control panel to generate a Key or Install an SSL Certificate will not show.

    1. Log into your control panel

    2. Click the SSL MANAGER Icon (or “SSL/TLS Manager”)

    3. Click the Private Key’s icon (or “Generate, view, upload or delete your private keys”) Scroll down to Generate a New Key and select the domain you wish to use with the SSL certificate.

    4. Please be sure to type (www) in the box preceding the domain name if you want the certificate to be on www.yourdomain.com, because if you’ve configured your store to work with www, you will get errors with the certificate running on the domain without the www.

    5. If you want the SSL Certificate to be on a subdomain such as “secure.domain.com” you will first need to create the subdomain in cpanel, and then type the subdomain in the box there when generating the key.

    6. After you have selected the domain you wish to use, click on “Generate” to create the public key file.

    7. Copy this information to a text file for later use. You can still retrieve the Key file from the server at a later time, in case something happen to the server and the key file is lost, you may need to purchase a new SSL Certificate.
